Congolese Army Killed 36 Burundian Refugees During A Demonstration In The East Of The Country.

The death of at least 36 Burundian refugees in eastern killed by the Congolese army on Friday evening (September 15th).

United Nations  and Bujumbura, requesting explanations from the authorities of the country.
The director of cabinet of the Minister of the interior of South Kivu, Josue Boji said,, The FARDC wanted to fire "bullets in the air but they were overwhelmed by the throwing of stones. 

Burundian refugees - including asylum-seekers - demanded the release of four of them, "deported to their country of origin" after being arrested, he added.


According to initial reports from the UN Mission in the DRC (Monusco), the death of a Congolese officer "resulted in an escalation of violence. In response, the Congolese defense and security forces opened fire on protesters disproportionately ". 

The head of Monusco, Mother Sidikou, has put forward a report of 36 dead - against 34 previously according to the Congolese authorities - condemning in a statement "any form of violence between communities".
He recalled "the obligation of the defense and security forces to use force only as a last resort, respecting the principles of necessity, proportionality and legality in accordance with international standards" and "calls on the authorities to open investigations promptly ".
