Clash: Ivorian police and students in Abidjan.

Clashes erupted on Monday between police officers and students protesting in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, against an "abusive increase in registration fees" for the school year.

In Cocody, which is home to the Félix Houphouët-Boigny University and its campuses, the police threw tear gas and used water jets to disperse the students, who set up barriers and threw stones at the forces of the order.

"We were planning a march to the offices of the Ministry of Education to denounce contributions amounting to 20,000 FCFA (30,5 euros) in addition to the 6,000 FCFA (9,15 euros) normally collected for the rights of Sylvère Kennedy, Communications Officer of the powerful Student and School Federation of Côte d'Ivoire (FESCI), told AFP. "We say no to this profitable and organized scam, backed by the ministry," he said.

Another trade unionist reported an "artificial increase", with each establishment charging additional "costs" beyond the cost of registration to the state.
