Hundreds of Algerian lawyers protested again on Saturday in the capital to demand the immediate resignation of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika who has been for 20 years in power.

They gathered in Algiers’ center, the scene of mass protests for one month, holding up slogans that read: “Respect the will of the people” and “Yes to a judiciary free from corrupt dignitaries.”

Algerians first took to the streets a month ago to protest against Bouteflika’s plan to seek a fifth mandate.

The 82-year old, who has rarely been seen in public since suffering a stroke in 2013, bowed to the protesters last week by reversing plans to seek re-election.

But he stopped short of quitting as head of state and said he would stay on until a new constitution is adopted. The move further enraged Algerians, and many of Bouteflika’s allies have turned against him.

Some members of the ruling National Liberation Front party, known by its French acronym FLN, have also sided with the demonstrators.

The powerful military has been watching the protests unfold.

The generals have intervened in the past at momentous times, including canceling an election which Islamists were poised to win in 1992, triggering a civil war in which an estimated 200,000 people were killed.
American rapper Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam

captivated a packed crowd at the Asharqiah Music Festival on Friday, opening up the second night of musical festivities at Sharqiah Season with a special shout-out to Saudi Arabia.

“You have no idea, I’ve been waiting to get to Saudi for years, man,” Akon said, before launching into his song, “Gunshot.” Later, he told the crowd: “I’m seeing a tremendous change in Saudi Arabia here tonight."

At 8 p.m., under a bright moon on a beautifully cool night, Akon began his set, delighting fans who had spent over 10 minutes chanting his name in anticipation of his arrival.

He entertained the crowd with some of his most popular hits, including “Smack That,” “Mr. Lonely” and “Sorry: Blame It On Me.” And he wrapped things up with “I love you, Saudi... thank you for making me feel at home."

Backstage before the concert, Akon told Arab News how excited he was to be in Saudi Arabia for the first time. He was especially excited to visit one Saudi city in particular.

“First thing tomorrow morning, I’m headed to Makkah to perform Umrah.”

Flood waters continue to rise across the United States and there are fears that many parts of the Mississippi River will remain above flood stage for a further two or three months.

Many waterways across the Great Plains into the Midwest have been hit by heavy spring rains. That accompanied by rapid snowmelt and ice jams have led to a massive and destructive rise in water levels.

The mayor of Atchison, Kansas, Shawn Rizza, monitored the increased water level of the Missouri River from a Kansas Highway Patrol aircraft on Friday.

Rizza encouraged residents of Atchison to volunteer for cleanup activities as the water recedes.

The flood crest was expected to reach the Kansas towns of Atchison and Leavenworth, about 55 kilometres further downstream, on Saturday, and Kansas City as early as Sunday, officials said.

Missouri River flooding was triggered by last week's ''bomb cyclone'' storm, which killed at least four people in Nebraska and Iowa, left a man missing below Nebraska's collapsed Spencer Dam, and inflicted an estimated $1.5bn in damages in Nebraska.

On Thursday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued their spring outlook. They report that the situation for the central US is soon going to get much, much worse.

"The extensive flooding we've seen in the past two weeks will continue through May and become more dire and may be exacerbated in the coming weeks as the water flows downstream," said Ed Clark, director of NOAA's National Water Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in a statement.

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Ricardo Ezzati, the archbishop of Santiago and the highest-ranking member of the Catholic Church in Chile, who has been caught up in the country's sex abuse scandal.

A Vatican statement on Saturday said the pope had named Bishop Celestino Aos Braco of the Chilean city of Copiapo, as "apostolic administrator" to run the Santiago archdiocese until a new archbishop is named to succeed Ezzati.

Ezzati, 77, faces multiple charges of covering up cases of abuse, including some relating to the case of Oscar Munoz, a former top aide to the Santiago Archbishop, who is facing trial on charges he abused and raped at least five children.

He denies wrongdoing.

In October, he exercised his right to silence after being summoned for questioning by a state prosecutor over the allegations.

His resignation brought to eight the number of bishops who have stepped down since all of the country's 34 bishops offered their resignations en masse during an emergency meeting with the pope last May over allegations of a cover-up.

That meeting was held after Vatican investigators produced a 2,300-page report alleging that senior Church officials in Chile had failed to act on abuse claims and in some cases hid them.

Chile sex abuse scandal: Catholics attempt to rebuild faith (2:32)

The decision to accept Ezzati's resignation comes at a time of growing criticism over the Church's response to a decades-long sexual abuse crisis that has gravely damaged its standing around the globe.

Victims of sexual abuse by clergymen say a top-level conference at the Vatican last month failed to come up with concrete measures to tackle the issue.

An Australian court last week sentenced former Vatican treasurer Cardinal George Pell to six years in prison for sexually abusing two choir boys in Melbourne - the most senior Catholic to be convicted for child sex offences.
Unknown armed men have killed more than 100 people in central Mali, according to local officials, in what is one of the deadliest attacks in a country plagued by worsening ethnic violence and the rise of armed groups.

The mayor of the town of Bankass, Moulaye Guindo said men dressed as traditional Donzo hunters encircled and attacked the nearby village of Ogossagou-Peul at around 4am (04:00 GMT) on Saturday.

"It's a very heavy death toll," he told Reuters news agency. "The village of Ogossagou is completely devastated," the mayor said, adding that bodies were still being discovered.

"The body count continues by the gendarmes, who have just told me they have found 110 bodies, but the count continues," he said.

Guindo said another nearby Fulani village, Welingara, had also been attacked, causing "a number" of deaths.

Abdoul Aziz Diallo, president of Tabital Pulaaku, a group representing ethnic Fulani, told The Associated Press news agency that the death toll in Ogossagou was 115.

The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Mali confirmed reports of an attack but gave no figures, according to AP.

Target:

Donzo hunters are part of the Bambara, Mali's largest ethnic group. The nomadic Fulani people are dispersed throughout the Sahel and West Africa.

Saturday's attack is believed to be the latest in a series of clashes between the communities of Donzo and Fulani - also known as Peul - that have left dozens dead in recent months.

The violence is incited by accusations of grazing cattle on Donzo land and disputes over access to land and water, but the area is also troubled by the influence of armed groups, who the Fulani are accused of being tied to.

Armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) have exploited ethnic rivalries in Mali and its neighbours Burkina Faso and Niger to boost recruitment and render vast swaths of territory in the Sahel region virtually ungovernable.

The world’s chemical weapons watchdog has opened an investigation into attacks in Syria’s opposition-held Eastern Ghouta to determine whether banned munitions had been used, diplomatic sources told Reuters.

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) will examine attacks including one on Sunday, which health authorities said killed a child and caused symptoms consistent with exposure to chlorine gas, the sources said. Political leaders in France, the US and UK said this month they would back targeted military action against Damascus if there were proof chemical weapons had been used by forces under President Bashar Assad.

The investigation by the OPCW fact-finding team comes as Syrian warplanes continued to strike Eastern Ghouta on Tuesday, despite a Russian call for a five-hour daily truce to allow the 400,000 people living there under siege to leave.

The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not permitted to discuss the operation in public. Use of chlorine as a chemical weapon is prohibited under the 1997 Chemical Weapons Convention. If inhaled, chlorine gas turns into hydrochloric acid in the lungs and the build-up of fluids can drown victims.

The latest OPCW mission is seeking to determine whether chemical weapons were used in violation of the international weapons convention, which Syria signed in 2013 after hundreds died in a massive sarin gas attack in Ghouta.

The OPCW will not assign blame. “OPCW’s technical secretariat continues to examine all credible allegations of chemical weapons use, reported by media or other sources, including the most recent allegations,” it said when asked about the investigation into the Ghouta attacks.

The OPCW team does not plan to travel to Ghouta because of safety concerns - two visits by inspectors in 2013 and 2014 were ambushed - but will gather witness testimony, photographic and video evidence, and interview medical experts, the sources said.

UN experts say North Korea sent items used in ballistic missile and chemical weapons programs to Syria along with missile technicians in violation of UN sanctions, and it transferred banned ballistic missiles systems to Myanmar.

The panel of experts monitoring sanctions against North Korea said its investigations into Pyongyang’s transfer of prohibited ballistic missile, conventional arms and dual use goods found more than 40 previously unreported shipments to Syria between 2012 and 2017.

The Associated Press reported on Feb. 2 that according to the experts, North Korea was flouting UN sanctions on oil and gas, engaging in prohibited ballistic missile cooperation with Syria and Myanmar, and illegally exporting commodities that brought in nearly $200 million in nine months last year.
Border Guards in Jazan arrested seven drug smugglers who tried to bring 618 kg of hashish into the Kingdom.

They seized narcotics that were buried in a Farasan island and meant to be picked up by the smugglers’ partners.

The Border Guards’ spokesman, Col. Saher Al-Harbi, said that in the past fortnight the guards foiled the smuggling attempt by people who tried to use fishermen to mislead security men.

Al-Harbi said the smugglers comprised five Saudis and two Yemenis who buried 350 kg of hashish in a Farasan island.

By combing the area where smugglers were arrested in coordination with Drug Enforcement Agency specialists in Jazan, 268 kg of hashish was found at another site.
Several thousand Macedonians took to the streets in capital Skopje on Tuesday to protest against a possible change of their country’s name, as required by Greece to end a long-running row.

Defying freezing temperatures and snow, the protesters, organized by a network of several civic associations, held umbrellas in the colors of the Macedonian flag and chanted “Long live Macedonia!” and “Macedonians!”
The protesters demanded an end to ongoing talks between Macedonia’s government and their Greek counterparts aimed at solving the 25-year dispute.
Athens, which has threatened to veto Macedonia joining NATO and can block its bid to join the European Union, argues its neighbor’s use of the name suggests Skopje has claims to the territory of Greece’s historic northern region of the same name.

But Macedonia has made significant progress recently and the EU has said it is “very confident” the dispute will be settled before July.

“The name of the state must remain unchanged,” Macedonian writer Eftim Kletnikov told the crowd that gathered in front of the EU headquarters in Skopje and marched to the parliament.

Political parties, including the main opposition nationalist VMRO-DPMNE, said they were not behind the protest.

Students grieving for slain classmates prepared for an emotional return Wednesday to their Florida high school, where a mass shooting shocked the nation and led teen survivors to spur a growing movement to tighten America's gun laws.

The community of Parkland, Florida, where residents were plunged into tragedy two weeks ago, steeled itself for the resumption of classes at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where nearby flower-draped memorials and 17 white crosses pay tribute to the 14 students and three staff members who were murdered by a former student.

"Looking forward to tomorrow Eagles! Remember our focus is on emotional readiness and comfort not curriculum: so there is no need for backpacks," school principal Ty Thompson tweeted. "Come ready to start the healing process and #RECLAIMTHENEST.

" Some students were filled with trepidation about the day ahead.

One of the student Jenna Korsten, 17, who was at the school when the shooting erupted but escaped unhurt.

Survivors of the Valentine's Day assault have emerged as impassioned young advocates for gun safety. Several spent Monday and Tuesday on a grim but vital mission in Washington: urging US lawmakers to curb or end sales of semi-automatic weapons like the one that was used to slaughter their fellow students.

Democrats hailed the young activists as an inspiration. But even with polls showing overwhelming public support for stricter gun laws, it would be a steep climb to achieve dramatic changes to gun laws in a Republican-dominated Congress.

Among Republicans, there was little enthusiasm for legislative action beyond closing gaps in a national background check system, a move supported by President Donald Trump. And the White House said he "still supports" raising the minimum age from 18 to 21 for some gun purchases, a policy opposed by the National Rifle Association, America's powerful gun lobby group. Republicans blamed the Florida tragedy on a "colossal breakdown" of law enforcement rather than the easy availability of assault rifles. "Let me just say we shouldn't be banning guns for law-abiding citizens.

We should be focusing on making sure citizens who should not get guns in the first place don't get those guns," House Speaker Paul Ryan told reporters. Ryan and other Republican leaders until now had largely been absent from the debate that has raged since a troubled 19-year-old armed with a semi-automatic rifle mowed down innocent people at the high school.

The speaker met with the "smart and passionate" Stoneman Douglas students, saying that "we had an important discussion about how to keep our kids and our schools safe."

"We will continue to work to find common ground on solutions that can help prevent the kind of senseless violence these students endured," Ryan said. But in his remarks to reporters, he blamed the rampage on the failure of local authorities to heed numerous warnings about the shooter, Nikolas Cruz, rather than lax US gun laws that have been sharply criticized by some survivors.

Student Delaney Tarr thanked Ryan and other lawmakers -- including Republican congressman Steve Scalise, who was shot and nearly killed in June at a congressional baseball practice by a heavily armed man -- for meeting with her group, but pressed them to act.

"We spoke, you listened. But now it is time for action," she said on Twitter. "We hope to see you follow through.

" Trump has pushed for arming teachers as a first line of defense, an approach favored by the NRA but widely criticized by teachers themselves as an impractical and unreasonable burden on them.

In Florida, the state legislature is weighing whether to raise the minimum age for gun purchases to 21 and imposing a three-day waiting period for gun purchases as part of a package of measures sponsored by the state's Republican governor.

An assault weapons ban is not among the proposals. Parkland residents, some sobbing, paid tribute at the sprawling memorial outside the school. "It's tragic. It's surreal," said neighbor Marie Donnelly, 51. "You hear about it all the time and suddenly it happens in your own backyard."

Activists say Sudanese authorities have released dozens of people arrested for taking part in last month's protests against rising bread prices.

Two protesters, Imtenan Ali el-Radi and Amal Habany, say they were released Tuesday from Kober prison, north of the capital, Khartoum. They say several families were waiting for their loved ones in front of the prison.

Protests erupted in Khartoum and other parts of the country last month after the government slashed subsidies and devalued the local currency, measures aimed at strengthening the battered economy. Hundreds of people were detained.

An unknown person blew themself up after throwing a suspected grenade into the US embassy compound in Podgorica, the Montenegrin government said Thursday.

“In front of the @USEmbassyMNE building in #Podgorica, #Montenegro an unknown person committed suicide with an explosive device. Immediately before, that person threw an explosive device,” the official government account tweeted, adding that the device was “most probably” a hand grenade.

An AFP correspondent could not see any damage on the spot as police sealed off the area.

According to the government, the attacker first threw an explosive device into the US embassy compound from an intersection close to a sports center.

A State Department spokesman confirmed “an attack on the US Embassy compound,” adding that “at this time Embassy officials are working closely with police to identify the assailant(s).”

Taiwan police have arrested four men over a bitcoin robbery worth 5 million Taiwanese dollars in what they said was the first case of its kind on the island.

Bitcoin is a virtual currency created from computer code that allows anonymous transactions and its value has soared since it came into being in 2009.

Taiwan police said three men in their early twenties lured a man surnamed Tai to the central city of Taichung, pretending to be interested in buying bitcoins.

After Tai showed proof of his bitcoins on his phone, the scammers assaulted him and his friend, then transferred 18 bitcoins worth 5 million Taiwanese dollars from Tai’s account via his phone.

The suspects attempted to pass off the heist as a drunken row by forcing the victim to drink Kaoliang, a strong Taiwanese liquor, Taichung city police said in a statement.

Police arrived at the scene after receiving a call about a dispute and one man was detained. The other two had fled.

“The police saw bloodstains at the scene ... after further investigation, it was discovered to be a bitcoin virtual currency robbery,” the statement released Wednesday said.

It described the case, which happened earlier this month, as “the first domestic case of bitcoin robbery.”

The two other suspects were later arrested, one on the outlying island of Kinmen where he had gone to escape police.

The fourth man, surnamed Shih, believed to be the mastermind behind the robbery, was also detained.

Britain saw its first Bitcoin armed robbery last month, according to reports, in which a virtual currency trader and his wife were threatened with a gun.

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are independent of governments and banks and use blockchain technology, where encrypted digital coins are created by supercomputers.

But calls are mounting for virtual currencies to be regulated, and prices have fluctuated in recent months amid concerns over tightened control.

A suicide bomber killed four Malian soldiers on Sunday, the army said, in the second deadly attack this weekend in the country’s troubled north.

Mali’s deteriorating security situation is of growing concern as Al-Qaeda-linked groups mount increasingly ferocious attacks on domestic and foreign forces.

“A terrorist suicide bomber was destroyed this morning, Sunday, in Menaka as he attempted to blow himself up on the approach to an army and national guard post,” a statement by the armed forces posted on social media said.

“Unfortunately during this operation, four armed forces personnel lost their lives,” it added.

The attack comes the day after 14 soldiers were killed and 18 wounded when suspected militants seized control of their camp in Soumpi, near Timbuktu in northern Mali and about 800 km east of Menaka.

And on Thursday 26 civilians including mothers and infants were killed when their vehicle ran over a land mine in Boni, central Mali, leading President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita to cancel plans to attend an AU summit in order to visit the area.

Keita told victims’ families: “All of Mali was in mourning, all of Mali is appalled” over the high civilian death toll.

“Everyone knows what we are going through ... Every day we do what we can,” he added.

African Union chief Moussa Faki said Sunday that “the time has come” to slap sanctions on those blocking peace in South Sudan, one of the most intractable wars facing African leaders as they meet in Ethiopia.

At the opening of the 30th annual African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Faki deplored the “unbelievable cruelty” and “senseless violence” of warring parties in South Sudan, which has been torn apart by conflict since December 2013, just two years after gaining independence.

Tens of thousands have died and nearly four million South Sudanese have been driven from their homes, while millions are going hungry in a humanitarian crisis expected to worsen as the lean season sets in.

Efforts to revitalize a 2015 peace agreement resulted in a cease-fire in December which lasted just hours before warring parties accused each other of breaking the truce.

“The time has come to sanction those who are blocking peace,” said Faki.

The United States, the main backer of South Sudanese independence and biggest aid donor to the country, again called for an arms embargo last week in front of the UN Security Council.

Previous efforts to impose a weapons embargo and sanctions have failed with some member states arguing this would be counterproductive to peace efforts.

UN ambassador Nikki Haley told the Security Council that President Salva Kiir’s government was “increasingly proving itself to be an unfit partner” in efforts to restore peace.

She urged African leaders gathered for the summit to “consider seriously the accountability measures it pledged for those who refuse to pursue peace.”

Festus Mogae, a former president of Botswana who leads an international cease-fire monitoring team, on Saturday called for “clear consequences” for those who violate the truce and urged regional trade bloc IGAD not to “maintain a unified approach.”

“For the revitalization process to be successful there must be a clear understanding among all South Sudanese leaders of the consequences of non-compliance and the determination of IGAD to ensure that agreements are complied with,” he said.

South Sudan descended into war in December 2013 when Kiir accused his former deputy Riek Machar of plotting a coup.

A peace deal was signed two years later but collapsed in July 2016 when fresh fighting in the capital Juba forced Machar into exile. The renewed violence spread across the country, and numerous new armed opposition groups have formed, further complicating peace efforts.
The leaders of Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan will meet on Monday in a bid to break a deadlock in negotiations over a hydroelectric dam Addis Ababa is building along its share of the Nile river, two official sources said on Sunday.

“The aim is to agree on the resumption of the consultations,” said a diplomat attending an African Union summit in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, where the three leaders are gathered. The diplomat was speaking on condition of anonymity.

An Egyptian government source confirmed that Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi would participate, saying he extended his stay to do so.

Sissi will meet Sudanese President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir and Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, according to the diplomat.

Discussions have been deadlocked for months over the wording of a study on the dam’s environmental impact. In December, Egypt proposed that the World Bank be allowed to help settle the dispute, a call dismissed by Ethiopia.

Countries that share the Nile river have argued over the use of its waters for decades — and analysts have repeatedly warned that the disputes could eventually boil over into conflict.

A bone of contention for both Ethiopia and Egypt is the speed at which the dam’s reservoir would be filled.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam — now over 60 percent complete and which will churn out 6,000 MW upon completion — is centerpiece to the country’s ambitious power exporting plans.
Protesters in Hong Kong gathered outside the government’s headquarters Sunday evening after a leading pro-democracy activist was barred from standing as a candidate in upcoming elections.

The ban on 21-year-old Agnes Chow, who was at the forefront of mass 2014 Umbrella Movement rallies calling for political reform, is the latest blow for the democracy camp and another sign that Beijing is tightening its grip on the semi-autonomous city.

The government Saturday rejected Chow’s application to stand in a by-election in March because her party Demosisto supports self-determination for Hong Kong.

Chow was among leading activists, lawmakers, academics and students who addressed around 2,000 protesters packed onto pavements outside the government offices.

“The government is trying to get rid of all the political parties who are against them,” said Chow who was greeted with applause.

“But even though we are under pressure and are suppressed, we still insist on human rights and freedoms,” she added.

Co-founded by high-profile democracy activist Joshua Wong, Demosisto does not campaign for independence but advocates self-determination and a referendum for Hong Kong people to decide how they want to be governed.

The ban on Chow has wide-scale implications for other similar activists wanting to stand for office, including Wong, who is currently out on bail after being jailed for his role in the 2014 protests.

A war with North Korea is avoidable, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Tuesday, urging direct talks between key powers on dismantling Pyongyang’s nuclear program.

Guterres said recent moves by South and North Korea to ease tensions were important, but he added: “let’s not forget that the essential problem is yet to be solved.”

“I am not yet sure that peace is guaranteed.” “I believe war is avoidable,” Guterres told reporters.

The UN chief said his goal was to ensure that “those who are more relevant in this process are able to seriously talk to each other and seriously find a way to denuclearization.”

The former Portuguese prime minister begins his second year as UN chief this month with North Korea looming large as the most pressing global security threat.

The United States and North Korea have shown little interest in holding direct talks to address the crisis.

Presenting his priorities for 2018 to the General Assembly, Guterres said there were “small signs of hope” after North Korea agreed to take part in the Winter Olympics in the South and the re-opening of a military hotline between Pyongyang and Seoul.

North Korea’s race to build an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of hitting the United States with a nuclear warhead has raised fears of a devastating conflict.
North Korea on Tuesday denounced President Donald Trump’s tweeted message that he has a bigger nuclear button than its leader Kim Jong Un as the “spasm of a lunatic” and the “bark of a rabid dog.”

Kim used his annual New Year address to warn he has a “nuclear button” on his table, sweetening his remarks by expressing an interest in dialogue and taking part in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in the South next month.

In response, Trump wrote on Twitter: “Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!“

In Pyongyang’s first reaction to the tweet, the North’s official party newspaper Rodong Sinmun on Tuesday dismissed Trump’s “swaggering” as nothing but the “spasm of a lunatic” frightened by North Korea’s power, and the “bark of a rabid dog.”

North Korea calls Trump nuclear button boast the ‘bark of a rabid North Korea on Tuesday denounced President Donald Trump’s tweeted message that he has a bigger nuclear button than its leader Kim Jong Un as the “spasm of a lunatic” and the “bark of a rabid dog.”

In the days after Kim’s New Year speech the two Koreas underwent a rapid apparent rapprochement, culminating last week in their first official talks for two years, when they agreed Pyongyang would attend the Games.

But the North has since issued a series of warnings against both the South and the US.

Pyongyang has made apocalyptic threats against its enemies for years, but Trump has repeatedly used highly menacing rhetoric toward the nuclear-armed North, sparking criticism that he is ratcheting up already-high tensions on the Korean peninsula.

He has threatened to rain “fire and fury” on the North, warning Kim he was on a “suicide mission” by developing nuclear missiles.

Trump’s “button” tweet “reflects the desperate mental state of a loser,” Rodong Sinmun said in its commentary, diagnosing him as “suffering from anger disorder and schizophrenia.”
India and Israel signed a number of agreements to take the relationship to a new level in the next 25 years.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu held delegation-level talks in New Delhi on Monday and inked nine agreements including on cybersecurity, agriculture, water, research and development, homeland security, trade and people-to-people contact.

“In the next 25 years the two respective countries should strive to raise bilateral cooperation in diverse sectors to a qualitatively new level in consonance with our strategic partnership,” the joint statement issued after the meeting said.

There was a visible camaraderie between the two leaders who were meeting each other after a gap of six months with Netanyahu addressing the Indian prime minister by his first name.

In a joint press conference after the official level talks, Modi said that “thriving two-way trade and investment is an integral part of our vision for a strong partnership. Prime Minister Netanyahu and I agreed on the need to do more in this direction.”

The Israeli prime minister called Modi “a revolutionary leader” and said that “Jews in India have never witnessed anti-Semitism like in some other countries; this is a tribute to India’s great civilization, tolerance and democracy. My wife and I are very happy that we are going to Bollywood.”

The statement also underlined the importance of “joint ventures” in the defense sector under the “Make in India” initiative and set the direction for developing more business models and partnerships for “joint ventures and joint manufacturing, including transfer of technology as well as joint research and development in defense and security fields.”

Dr. Zakir Hussain, of the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), a New Delhi-based think tank, said that “the wide-ranging agreement” showed that “we have reached a second level of our relations, we don’t need to explore areas. Areas are already explored. We want to add values to our relations in terms of mutual benefit.”

Hussain said that “Israel wants India to change its position on Palestine and by deepening political and economic engagement with New Delhi it wants to mold India’s stand vis-a-vis Palestine.”

He said that “India has historically a consistent policy toward Palestine.
Britain’s Royal Air Force scrambled two fighter jets to intercept Russian strategic bombers near UK airspace on Monday, in another illustration of ongoing tensions.

The RAF confirmed that it sent Typhoon aircraft from the Lossiemouth base in Scotland on a “quick reaction alert” as two Tupolev Tu-160 Blackjack bombers approached Britain.

“The Russian aircraft were initially monitored by a variety of friendly nation fighters and subsequently intercepted by the RAF in the North Sea,” the air force said. “At no point did the Russian aircraft enter sovereign UK airspace.”

Russia’s Defense Ministry said the pair of bombers flew over the Barents, Norwegian and North seas during a 13-hour training mission that covered neutral waters, in line with international norms.

“All flights by Russian aircraft are performed in strict accordance with international rules for using airspace without infringement on any countries’ borders,” the ministry said in a statement.

Encounters between Russian and NATO warplanes have become increasingly frequent as Moscow has demonstrated its resurgent military might.

Russia also has increased its navy’s presence in the Mediterranean and other areas.
Nigeria’s government on Monday summoned the United States ambassador to explain reported remarks by US President Donald Trump that some immigrants from Africa and Haiti come from “****hole” countries, Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama said.

He was responding to a text message from Reuters in which he confirmed that Ambassador Stuart Symington had been summoned. He gave no more details.

Trump reportedly made the remarks at a private meeting with lawmakers on immigration on Thursday. A US senator who attended the gathering said the president used “vile, vulgar” language, including repeatedly using the word “****hole” when speaking about African countries.

The US president on Friday denied using such derogatory language. But he has been widely condemned in many African countries and by international rights organizations. African Union countries demanded an apology on Friday.
A Palestinian was shot dead during clashes with Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank on Monday, Palestinian officials said.

Ahmed Saleem, 24, was shot in Jayyous near Qalqilya, close to the separation line between Israel and the West Bank, the health ministry said, with official Palestinian media saying the incident occurred during clashes.

The statement is not clear, no confirmation from the Israeli army.

Saleem was the 17th Palestinian to be killed since US President Donald Trump's controversial declaration of Jerusalem as Israel's capital on December 6, most of them in clashes with Israeli forces.

One Israeli has been killed since then.
Trump's announcement infuriated Palestinians, who see east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, and sparked protests.

Separately Monday, the Palestinian leadership was meeting to develop a strategy to respond to Trump, with president Mahmud Abbas on Sunday denouncing the US leader's peace proposals as the "slap of the century".

An aide to former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe has revealed how generals warned him to step aside as protests against him grew, or face being “lynched” like Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi.

Massive street protests against 93-year-old Mugabe erupted after the military briefly took power in November following the veteran leader’s sacking of then-vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Mugabe subsequently resigned after apparently striking a deal with the army and supporters of Mnangagwa who then succeeded Mugabe.

“The commanders sent us with a very chilling message, they said ‘please go and get the president to appreciate the gravity of the situation out there’,” Mugabe’s former spokesman, George Charamba, told the Daily News Sunday paper.

“There was the possibility of a Libyan scenario where the president would have been dragged out of the Blue roof and lynched,” he added, referring to Mugabe’s private residence in Harare.

Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011 after a violent popular uprising and slaughtered by a mob after he was found hiding in a drainage pipe.

The newspaper reported, “Mnangagwa recounted a scuffle at the Mozambican border where officials attempted to shoot him, but were disarmed by one of his twin sons.

Mnangagwa has previously said that he feared an attempt would be made on his life after his personal protection officers were withdrawn following his sacking.

He subsequently made it to an airstrip where an acquaintance sent a private plane which carried him to South Africa from where he negotiated with Mugabe.

By the end of the crisis, even former first lady Grace Mugabe, whose ambition to succeed her husband was widely credited as a catalyst for the army’s intervention, wanted Mugabe to go.

“Even the first lady was behind Mugabe’s decision to resign,” said Charamba.

“When you have a president who can no longer command institutions he is supposed to lead, there is a problem. But what should be noted is that Mugabe never refused to step down, he wanted to do it in his own way.”
